BARRY POLICE and council leaders have promised an immediate crack-down in response to last week's rampage by a 50-strong gang on the Buttrills estate.
Cllr Anthony Powell, chairman of the Vale of Glamorgan Council, held an emergency site meeting on Tuesday with Superintendent Josh Jones, Inspector Geraint Evans and council officers Miles Punter and Dave Knevett.
Cllr Powell said: "I have spoken with many Buttrills residents over the past week. What they had to say was extremely disturbing. We have a completely unacceptable situation where senior citizens are too scared to venture out of their own homes because they are living in fear.
"I believe a greater police presence is needed on the Buttrills. Superintendent Josh Jones was in full agreement and has assured me that the police will raise their profile in the area. There is also the possibility of a CCTV van being deployed there.
"The council will work in partnership with the police. We will do everything in our power to ensure that this never happens again."
Chief Inspector James Moore of Vale of Glamorgan police said: "Officers have responded to a number of reported incidents in the North Walk and Buttrills Field areas. The incidents are being investigated. Patrols are being increased in these areas, as this kind of anti-social behaviour will not be tolerated.
"I would urge parents of youths who frequent these areas to make sure that their children are not those involved.
"We would request witnesses to these incidents to contact us immediately on (01446) 734451."
A 50-strong gang, said to be in their mid-teens, last week reportedly went on a four-night rampage damaging cars and property in the Buttrills. The community centre was allegedly stoned while pensioners were holding a social evening inside.
Further damage was reported to car wing mirrors, bodywork and windscreens.
