It only took a single spark

THE family who own the stunning Vale landmark the Blue Anchor, damaged by fire last week, have vowed to rebuilt it.

The pub, which has stood in Aberthaw village since 1380, has been in the Coleman family since 1941.

The business was handed over to Jeremy and Andrew Coleman from their father, John, 15 years ago.

Neither son was able to talk to the News, but their father confirmed the pair had every intention of re-thatching the roof.

He said: "It was a very sad day, and my son, Jeremy, and his wife, Jane, were very upset.

"But we have already started looking into plans to rebuild the pub the way it was - or as close to as we can manage.

"Scaffolding has been put around the building only as a safety precaution, but the walls are sound.

"They have been standing for more than 600 years, so I can't see why we wouldn't bring it back to the way it was."

The former landlord praised the work of the fire service. He said: "They worked so hard to save the pub.

"They were fighting against a very high wind and low water pressure, which was a definite hindrance.

"But we cannot fault the effort they put in while they were here."

Mr Coleman said: "So far, the insurance company has been very good, although it is hard to tell when we will be able to start work.

"But my attitude is the sooner the better. We don't have a timescale in place just yet, but we have our staff to provide for and we want the pub back as the focal point of the village as soon as we can."
