DVD review - Calendar Girls

THIS MOVING and heartfelt British film is a cracker. Receiving heaps of critical acclaim when it was first released in the cinema, Calendar Girls is based on a true and emotional story.

Julie Walters and Helen Mirren take two of the lead roles, and their sparky relationship glues the whole plot together.

Belonging to their local branch of the Women's Institute, the pair giggle their way through the less-than-entertaining meetings, partners in rebellion.

But then Annie Clark's (Walters) husband is diagnosed with cancer and dies.

In John's memory, the Annie and Chris decide to raise money to buy a sofa, which is when John's speech sows the seeds of a money-making idea in Chris's mind.

This sets of the hilarious chain of events that lead to eleven middle-aged, middle-class ladies baring nearly everything for a calendar.

Making you laugh and cry while inspiring you to be a better person. You can do anything you set your mind to - at least, with the right lighting, ample props and a very broad-minded photographer.
