Kids' safety

I read with interest to see that Tory councillor Tony Hampton and the other Conservative councillors of Illtyd Ward in Barry have tried to pass the buck for their failure to build a zebra crossing on Seven Avenue.

Parents like myself, whose children attend All Saints Primary School, and other residents who live near the school, should ask themselves why, when Cllr Hampton has been in power for almost five years, has he failed to deliver a safe way for children to cross the road?

During this time, not only has his party been in control of the Vale Council, but he has held the senior cabinet position with responsibility for education.

We should also remember, that it was the Conservatives who were in power when the houses at the Brambles were granted planning permission. Did it not cross the minds of councillors at that time that children who were to move into those houses might need a safe way to go to school?

Why did they not make it a condition of the planning permission and require the developers to build a zebra crossing at the same time as the houses?

Their incompetence has put children at risk and will mean that local council taxpayers will have to pick up the bill to provide a crossing.
