Safety concerns over road layout

A CONCERNED Barry motorist wants to start a crusade to prevent more fatalities at a notorious accident blackspot.

Self-employed builder Ceri Rowlands lives on Coldbrook Road and regularly has to travel along the Docks link road.

The 60-year-old is convinced last week's tragic accident - where Dinas Powys dad Ian Bull lost his life - could have been prevented if there had been a different road layout.

Mr Rowlands told the News: "I have lived here for over 30 years, and remember the link road being built in 1980.

"In the first three years there were numerous accidents, the worst one where three teachers were killed on their way to St Richard Gwyn School.

"The problem has been made worse with the new junction. It forces cars to a complete stop, then accelerate madly to join the traffic or take silly risks to cut across it.

"The cars hammer down the road, not sticking to 60mph, to make the hill. They are forced to slow down when they get to the roundabout by Lidl, which proves this measure works.

"There's plenty of room around the area for it to be possible without having to take land from anywhere else.

Now Ceri is embarking on a campaign to force the local authority to re-think the junction.

The Vale of Glamorgan Council was not available for comment as the News went to press.
