Sully wants to stay put

A POLITICAL boundary change for Sully has been greeted with disdain by community councillors.

Proposals by the Boundary Commission could lead to the village becoming part of the Penarth and Cardiff South constituency.

The Vale of Glamorgan would have St Brides Major added.

Chairman of Sully Community Council Malcolm Davies said: "The consensus of opinion is that this is not a required change.

"Sully Community Council strongly opposes this proposal on the grounds that it would place Sully, a rural community, into a city conurbation with no community links or ties to the area.

"Furthermore, Sully Community Council considers itself to be the heart of the Vale of Glamorgan area and in no way relates to Cardiff."

Sully Council clerk Brian Daniel added: "The size of the electorate in the amended constituency will be over 71,000. This is well in excess of the quota laid down in the Electoral Commission's own basic criteria and will increase as the area continues to develop.

"We are convinced that the constituents here would not want to be part of the Cardiff constituency."

Other objections are that no real reason has been given for that change and that the size of the boundary from Barry to St Mellons is too large.

Officials think a better idea would be to have Penarth, Llandough, Wenvoe, Dinas Powys and Sully in the same area, because these communities have more links with each other. This would create a new constituency.

The current MP for Sully, John Smith, said: "It is my intention to support Sully Community Council in its bid to remain within my constituency. And recognising that that the Vale of Glamorgan has far exceeded its electoral quota, I will be asking for the communities of St Brides and Ewenny to stay in the Bridgend constituency. Having represented Sully on and off for the past 15 years, I intend to fight to retain it."
