Anger at Sully's move to Cardiff

SULLY residents are likely to fight proposals to include the village in a Cardiff constituency.

Vale of Glamorgan councillor Anthony Ernest is disgusted the Boundary Commission of Wales has unveiled plans to bring Sully under the huge umbrella of Cardiff Central and Penarth.

He said: "We haven't really had time to react to the recommendations as there was no prior consultation.

"In my opinion, Sully will not be best served by the move, and these proposals will be met with discontent."

The plan is to include Sully in the Cardiff Central and Penarth parliamentary constituency and for St Bride's Major to join the Vale of Glamorgan. This would be for Welsh Assembly, Parliament and European Parliament elections. It does not affect the boundary of the Vale of Glamorgan Council.

Cllr Anthony Ernest added: "The Cardiff Central constituency is already large, and with the 3,400 people on our electoral register, it will swell the numbers to incredible size."

And according to the Sully councillor, there is already a certain level of confusion in Penarth, as the Vale of Glamorgan is the local government authority, but the area is politically attached to Cardiff.

Cllr Anthony Ernest said: "The trouble is that the boundaries for Cardiff Central and Penarth will stretch from New St Mellons to Sully Hospital. There will be no community of interest with an area this large, and I feel our small village will not benefit at all.

"I have not had opportunity to canvass opinion, but I think it is safe to say this proposal will be fought, even in the limited time they have given us to object."

The Boundary Commission for Wales' review team leader, Steve Halsall, said: "If the recommendations are accepted, residents will see no difference in their local government dealings, as they will still fall under the Vale of Glamorgan Council's responsibility."
