THE GIBBONSDOWN Children's Centre had a huge boost for its fight against proposed budget cuts when the newly appointed Welsh Assembly Childcare Champion visited last week.
Dr Brian Gibbons AM witnessed how the centre supports parents returning to work or training as a result of the subsidised childcare.
He was joined by Vale Assembly Member Jane Hutt, who said: "This is a pioneering example of a partnership with parents, Barry College, Sure Start, the New Deal for Lone Parents, Gibbonsdown Food Co-operative and Communities First all joined in this successful children's centre.
"During our visit parents came to collect their children and told us how important the centre was for them.
"It gives quality childcare at rates parents can afford. Children get a flying start in life and parents can return to work, further education or training."
Centre manager Gill Bloom said: "This was a very welcome visit. Jane Hutt asked many questions and Dr Gibbons was very interested in our work.
"It is good to know we are appreciated, not only by families here, but by people in authority.
"A decision is expected soon, and morale is still quite high among staff. We are worried, but we have to believe we are not going to close and that funding will be found.
"Although I sympathise with the Vale of Glamorgan Council trying to budget, their commitment would mean a lot."
During the visit Brian Gibbons and Jane Hutt were told that during 2002-2003 the centre had benefited over 199 children, 43 parents had remained in work or gained employment and 10 parents had undertaken further education and training.
Jane Hutt said: "This centre is in the heart of the Communities First area. Local people have been involved in drawing up plans to refurbish the whole building for childcare and community use. It is a 'win win' facility for children, parents and the local community and is important in meeting social needs in this area."
