LLANDAFF 45
FOR the second week running, Sully Sports committed hara-kiri as they gifted Llandaff several late tries through unforced errors, and, to be truthful, a lack of fitness and stamina among several members of the pack.
Llandaff fielded a jumbo-sized pack that won just about all the set pieces and when they didn't win the ball, they pressurised the Sports.
In the loose, it was a different picture for almost an hour as the Sports excelled in the open and were strong in defence.
Llandaff that opened the scoring, making light of the boggy ground and driving drizzle, which persisted all through the match, as they moved the ball quickly in the three-quarters and took their passes at pace, scoring an excellent try wide out after 15 minutes.
Not to be outdone, the Sports hit back within minutes, forwards and backs working together to drive through the home defence, centre Peter Mees, having already been involved twice in the attack, bursting though the cover defence from 20 metres out for an equally impressive try.
Without a first XV fixture, Llandaff were able to start with a strong side.
After the break, they also injected a few more of their senior side to add some extra pace and strength, although the pattern of the game did not change until the final quarter.
Trying to change tactics, and win some lineout ball, the Sports shortened a defensive lineout, but failed to win possession.
To add insult to injury, the referee failed to notice, and penalise, the extra Llandaff players.
Llandaff having stolen possession made the visitors pay the ultimate price, running through to the posts for a converted try.
This opened the floodgates, and the Cardiff outfit grew in confidence, as the Sports lost their composure.
Errors and a lack of fitness took their toll over the last 15 minutes, in which the Sports conceded 32 unanswered points.
One of the few Sports players who cold hold his head up was man-of-the-match Wayne Storey, who never stopped tackling or supporting the ball-carrier.
Despite the hard time Llandaff had given their visitors on the pitch, the hospitality and after-match camaraderie in the clubhouse was generous and much appreciated by the vanquished Sports.
Apologies are due to three-quarter Doug Powell, for the reporter's oversight in producing last week's match report, as he should have recorded the club's appreciation to him for his sponsoring of the match ball.
Also not mentioned in the report was the unusual and historical debut appearance of Doug's father, also Doug Powell.
Doug senior went on to win the raffle in the club and put his junior players into the shade as he swiftly downed his presentational jug of beer!
Doug senior's dad is also named Doug, so the club is now considering the possibility of fielding a side with three Doug Powells in the line-up!
To address training and fitness issues, and to make a decision on the Club's annual tour, a players' meeting has been arranged on Thursday, January 15, in the clubhouse at 9pm.
All players are urged to attend!
