Brick by brick, these awards are here to stay

THE FIRST "Built in Quality" Award Scheme celebrated its initial success at an awards dinner on Friday, January 9.

Organised by the Building Control Group of the Vale of Glamorgan, the awards recognise builders who have achieved high standards in regulation projects in the Vale of Glamorgan.

To be eligible for an award, builders had to be nominated by their building control surveyors from local authority building control departments.

The "Built in Quality" awards had four categories: Single New Build Alteration or Extension, won by William Oakley of G Oakley & Sons; Mulitple Housing, won by Stephen Lee; Small Commercial & Industrial, won by Gordon Hadfield, Spunney Holiday and Leisure Park, and Large Commercial & Industrial, won by Paul Davies of John Weaver Contractors.

The first of its kind in this area, the "Built In Quality" award scheme is not just restricted to building companies from Barry and the Vale of Glamorgan. Companies from across the country can be included, as long as the building work they complete is within the Vale.

The main sponsors for the awards were The Federation of Master Builders, Rockwool Limited and the Best Western Mount Sorrel Hotel, Barry, who also provided a venue for the event.

The judging panel for the awards included Geoff Bridgemann, director of the Federation of Master Builders and Cllr A J Williams, chairman of the planning committee, Colin Blick, operational manager Building Control and Rob Thomas, head of Planning and Transportation, all from the Vale of Glamorgan Council.

Colin Blick, who hosted the awards, said, "It was a very big success, all but one company, from Lincolnshire, turned up. It's definitely going ahead next year, the builders are looking forward to it, and are already preparing to put projects forward."
