50 YEARS AGO

EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of January 14, 1954:

The Minister of Health, Miss Florence Horsburgh, has notified parents of children transferred from Colcot to Jenner Park School that she cannot intervene in their dispute with the Glamorgan County Council concerning the provision of free transport for the scholars.

The Townswomen's Guild monthly meeting was held on Monday, Mrs E Joy Davies presiding. Members were entertained by pupils of Miss Alice Burrows, who gave an excellent performance of three scenes from Alice in Wonderland.

With the Christmas festivities over, members of the St Aidan's Gymnastic Club are now getting down to the more serious side of their activities; in particular they are competing for a place in the Grade 2 team competition in connection with the Welsh Amateur Gymnastic Association Championships.

On Sunday, the Kindergarten and Junior and Senior Sunday Schools of St Aidan's Church, Cadoxton, joined together for the annual service of "Following the Star".

Appointment of Miss O R Powell, deputy principal of the Glamorgan Teachers' Training College, Barry, as principal, is recommended by the county council training colleges sub-committee.

EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of January 18, 1979:

The lorry driver's strike does not appear to be having an immediate effect on the industrial lifeline of Barry. Companies report a full production rota though, in the majority of cases, difficulty is being experienced in the importation of raw materials, and the exportation of the finished product.

Stephen Bishop-Kovacevich regarded as one of the world's leading pianists will feature in the next Barry Concerts Society venture at the Barry Memorial Hall on Tuesday next.

A pupil at Balfour House School, St Athan, Dario Marcello Frigo, has just been awarded a place at Trinity College, Cambridge for October this year.
