Island team pipped at post by Knights

BARRY Island Chess Team were pipped by Cardiff Knights in their final match of 2003 at the Marine Hotel.

The final score was 2-2 with one adjourned game, and after match analysis it was awarded to Cardiff making the final score 3-2.

Scorers for the Island were the impressive Eric Blackwell and Autumn Cooke, who secured a nice checkmate and was player of the match.

M Cooke, A Hennessy and S Cooke made up the rest of the team.

Cardiff scorers were H Price, D Stevenson and Jon A Cowhey, with G White and A Gauci making up the team.

Next match is away to Caerphilly on Thursday, January 15. Team: M Cooke, E Blackwell, A Cooke, R Cooke, S Cooke. Subs A Hennessy and T Cooke.

Congratulations to Thomas Cooke who scored 4-5 in the Welsh U-12 Rapid Play chess tournament, finishing joint third. Autumn Cooke can consider herself a little unlucky to finish 2-3, losing in the last round. R Cooke, S Cooke and Lee Gelipse also competed for the Island.
