50 YEARS AGO

EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of January 7, 1954:

On Thursday, Mr Raymond Gower MP for Barry, accompanied by his agent, officially opened the new Osborn Rooms at the Cadoxton Conservative Club which, throughout the war, were used by the military authorities and later as a shadow factory, Mr T Nicholls presided.

A sub-committee of the Barry Development Committee has contacted Messrs Joseph Rank Ltd, and discussed with them the state of trade at Barry Docks owing to the decline in coal shipments.

At a meeting of the Barry Finance Committee on Thursday, the Borough Treasurer (C T McLeod) gave a warning that in view of the rising trend of rates, the Town Council should not approve any scheme involving large capital expenditure until the Finance Committee had studied the financial implications.

The Mayor's Annual Children's Christmas Party was held at the Memorial Hall on Friday when roughly 230 children were entertained to a film show before they sat down to tea.

25 YEARS AGO

EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of January 11, 1979:

A former Barry woman has been awarded an MBE in the New Year's Honours List. She is Joan Bell the wife of E J (Ted) Bell a former Barry man, who gained the award for her services to the British community in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

During the recent freeze-up, 499 complaints of broken pipes were reported to the Vale of Glamorgan council, and of these, 321 have been attended to, Mr Colin Rees, Director of Engineering and Building Services, reported to a Housing Committee meeting on Monday.

There were 2,538 births at St David's Hospital, Cardiff, in 1976, and 41.4 percent were from the Vale of Glamorgan.

Two houses at Barry Road and Courtenay Road, Barry, have been modernised by the Vale Borough Council at a total cost of £12,321.
