Hll's well

PROMPTED by concerns about the state of Barry Town Hall and Library, in 1991, Barry Citizens' Action Group entered a competition to find the most neglected historic building in Britain. The competition was organised by the conservation group, 'Save Britain's Heritage'. Although our entry of Barry Town Hall and Library was not judged as the 'winner', it appeared in The Times with other commended entries. This dubious honour shocked many local people into realising the state of neglect reached by the Grade II Listed municipal building.

With the dawn of 2004, the Town Hall presented a different picture. At last it is receiving the attention warranted all those years ago. The first phase of its transformation is completed, with the second phase due to start in the New Year.

When redevelopment is completed, perhaps it will be on course to win a more prestigious honour.
