50 YEARS AGO

EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of December 24, 1953:

People were turned away from All Saints Church, Barry, on Sunday when a packed congregation was present to hear the Rector of Barry, the Rev W N Peregrine conduct a festival service of nine lessons and carols.

The Mayor (Ald Tom Yeoman) and the Mayoress (Cllr Mrs Olwen Yeoman) gave a helping hand to Santa Claus (Mr Frank Hart) when he disembarked from the Barry Lifeboat at the Pontoon on Saturday en route to King Square.

On Friday, the illuminations around the town hall, and the Christmas Tree went on for the first time.

After a hold-up lasting many months, work has started on Monday, on the completion of the Amy Evans Hospital in Holton Road, which is to embrace an outpatients' department and physiotherapy department.

The gallantry of Mr Donald Searle, of Dyfrig Street, Barry Island, a member of the crew of the Barry Lifeboat, was recognised at a ceremony in the Mayor's Parlour at the town hall on Saturday evening.

EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of January 4, 1979:

With the South Glamorgan County Council due to consider outline planning permission for the proposed sewage treatment plant at Cog Moors Sully on January 24, all the competent authorities have been advised of the extent and nature of objections.

New manager of the Pearl Assurance Company's E (Cardiff) Division - which includes the local district office at Barry - from January 1 is Mr Joe Wood, 47.

The recent Christmas Fair held by the wives at RAF St Athan raised £1,600 for charities.
