Focus on DCT risks

VALE of Glamorgan MP John Smith has hosted a landmark Westminster event aimed at raising awareness of the dangers of travel-related DVT.

A panel of international experts addressed guests at Parliament's first ever conference to highlight the condition.

Mr Smith, chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group DVT awareness, co-hosted the event with Cheryl Gillan MP. He also tabled an Early Day Motion calling for Government support.

Attendees at the conference heard presentations of latest evidence by four specialist speakers.

Professor Gianni Belcaro, of G D'Annunzio University, Italy, reviewed clinical studies evaluating the risk of developing DVT on long and short haul flights and the effectiveness of preventative measures.

Medical director of the Fleet Street Travel Clinic, Dr Richard Dawood focused on how cases of travel-related DVT have been reported and why the condition has attracted media attention.

The presentation by ABTA's head of consumer affairs Keith Richards considered how the travel industry is taking the issue of DVT on board and advised on what practical steps travellers can take to protect themselves.

Concluding proceedings was Dr Ander Cohen, honorary consultant vascular physician, Guy's, King's and St Thomas' hospital, who looked at all preventive measures available.

The keynote speakers were followed by a lively question and answer session from the floor.

John Smith said: "The phenomenal interest in this event demonstrates public and professional need for greater information about travel-related DVT.

"We will continue our campaign to focus Government attention on this serious health issue."
