EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of December 10 1953:

Colcot Welfare Association held their annual Christmas fayre at the Welfare Hall, Winston Road, on Saturday afternoon, when the president of the association, Cllr R M Howell. performed the opening ceremony.

The finance and parliamentary committee is to warn the chief officers of the council against overspending. This was decided at a meeting of the committee on Thursday night.

A South Wales reunion of Butlins campers is to be held in Cardiff this weekend.

Mr T R V Tyrrell, speaking to the Barry Island Women's Branch of the Barry Conservative and Unionist Association, said that Mr Aneurin Bevan acknowledged the need for amending the Rent Restriction Act in 1949.

25 YEARS AGO

EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of December 14 1978:

A scholarship for advanced study at the Kansas State University, USA, has been awarded to Barry student Miss Gail Liscombe, of Greenbanks Drive, Barry.

South Glamorgan County Council has made compulsory purchase orders for the Barry Docks link road from Wenvoe to Biglis Bridge, Barry, and it is hoped that construction work will start in late 1979.

A joint housing venture - the first of its kind in Wales - will provide the Cwm Talwg area of Barry with 480 new private homes over the next five years, at an overall cost of £1m.

At a meeting on Tuesday week, the Women's Gas Federation greeted George Shewring, a florist who demonstrated the art of making your own Christmas decorations.
