50 YEARS AGO

EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of October 29 1953:

The borough entertainments and publicity organiser (Mr Frank Hart) submitted a detailed report to the entertainments committee on Thursday for the organising of a carnival for 1954.

New houses being built at Barry Island have lovely wash houses but no outlet for the water. As a result, housewives have to carry the water outside to the nearest drain.

As growing men, pupils of the Barry Boys' Grammar School should have bread with their meals, urged Ald Mrs Mary Holland at a meeting of the South East Glamorgan Divisional Executive yesterday week.

Performances by two alsatian dogs were a feature of a presentation concert held at the Memorial Hall on Friday for the purpose of distributing prizes to scholars who had entered a competition.

25 YEARS AGO

EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of November 2 1978:

Former Olympic long jump champion Lynn Davies will be a special guest when the Rotary Club of Barry stage their Fireworks Fiesta at Romilly Park this Saturday, November 4.

Madam Isabel Davies and members of her party entertained members of the St Nicholas Darby and Joan Club on Friday.

A well-known local auctioneer and valuer, Mr Dennis Hampton Jeffrey, has been elected chairman of the South Wales branch, The Incorporated Society of Valuers and Auctioneers.

Guests of the Dinam WRVS Darby and Joan Club on Thursday were Mr Ivor Arnold and his daughter Vicki, with vocal solos and pieces on the harp.
