50 YEARS AGO

EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of July 30, 1953:

At an entertaining game at Cardiff Arms Park on Tuesday evening, Barry were beaten in the final of the Cardiff Athletic Club Cricket Knockout competition.

Barry's Coronation Carnival lost £920, it was stated at a meeting of the Finance and Parliamentary Committee on Thursday night. Of this sum £500 was guaranteed.

Cllr E Sheen, asked the borough engineer (Mr John Proctor) at a meeting of the Memorial Hall Committee on Monday what progress was being made with reconstruction of the memorial hall.

The Barry lifeboat was launched and RAF air-sea rescue craft were alerted on Sunday after police had received notification that an aeroplane was believed to have crashed into the sea between Cardiff and Barry.

No trace of wreckage was found.

25 YEARS AGO

EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of August 3, 1978:

The Barry Constituency Labour Party have asked the South Glamorgan County Council to reinstate the originally proposed line for the Barry Docks link road to take it to the east of St Cadoc's School and away from the residential area of Coldbrook.

It was the holiday of a lifetime for 78-year-old Mrs Mary Jane (Dolly) Pycroft of Kent Green, Barry, when she won the title of "The Grandest Grandmother" whilst on holiday at Prestatyn Sands Holiday Camp this month.

Sir Geraint Evans, will be taking in the grand operatic concert this Sunday, August 6, held in conjunction with the Royal National Eisteddfod of Wales being held in Cardiff.

Mr Simon Latham of Cwm Barry Way, Barry, has been awarded the John Stuart Corbett Prize for achieving the best results of students in the Cardiff and District area in the Law Society's Part II examinations held in February.
