Greatest save of all for Barry Town

Barry Town Football supporters are celebrating after their beloved team was pulled back from the brink of closure.

Last week, the News reported the dramatic save by Stuart Lovering who met with creditors on Wednesday, December 10, at the Jenner Park clubhouse. The Dragon's debtors accepted his offer of £125,000, making the previously unknown businessman the new owner of the team.

But it was only after this tense meeting, and then a shareholders' gathering, that the fans were told the glad tidings - giving the 60-strong crowd waiting for news of an early Christmas present.

Colin Churchill has supported the club for over 50 years. The former President of the Supporters Club was thrilled when he heard the news. He said: "We were all pretty sure Stuart's bid would be accepted, but there was always chance it might not. There was a meeting held at the club for the fans that night, and we had to wait until 7.45pm to get the news.

Colin added: "The whole atmosphere was extremely up-beat on Wednesday night. There were so many supporters there to hear the news, and we are very pleased to have Stuart on board. He seems very genuine, and obviously knows a lot about running a business. We are all more than willing to give him any help and advice he might need about managing a football team, should he need any.

"There's still a long way to go, and I don't think the team will be back to its former glory in my lifetime. Some of our fans are hoping we will be back to being a full-time squad within a couple of years, but I can't see that happening. We have to be realistic.

"My hopes for Barry Town's future is that we get three places from bottom this season, and make a good start for the next one."
