DVD review

WHATEVER you have heard about this film... don't believe it. If your friends have told you it's terrible, that's a lie. If they have said it was good, they were wrong about that too. It's brilliant.

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl is meant to be a ghost story, but it's more comical than scary.

Johnny Depp plays punch-drunk gentleman pirate Jack Sparrow, once the proud captain of the most feared law-breaking ship on the water, the Black Pearl.

But his mutinous crew rebelled and left him stranded on a remote island - with only a gun loaded with one shot for company.

In his search for the Pearl, he comes across Will Turner (Orlando Bloom), a lowly blacksmith who was found as a young lad floating on driftwood. He has no idea of his past, and his future looks bleak without the love of his life. Enter the damsel in distress - the governor's daughter Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley) who was the one who found Will, and although she's not supposed to, she has actually fallen for him, too.

Put the three together, throw in a dash of bootlegged gold and a cursed crew, and you have a great night of entertainment.
