A BARRY burglar who wielded a knife at a terrified family has been jailed.
Andrew Paul Guy, of Hilary Rise, was sentenced to 27 months on December 2 at Cardiff Crown Court.
The Court heard how the 29-year-old committed the aggravated burglary at the family's Porthkerry Road home on October 13.
He approached the house in the early hours of the morning and gained entry through an insecure ground floor window.
Guy stole two mobile phones, car keys and other items of property, before arming himself with a knife from the kitchen drawer.
He then made his way upstairs where the family members were asleep in their bedrooms. But one member heard a noise and wakened.
The family went to investigate the other rooms in the house and came face to face with a stranger armed with a kitchen knife.
Luckily, once confronted, Guy fled the scene. He ran down the stairs and escaped into the night.
The family immediately called 999 and South Wales Police responded quickly.
They also alerted the Vale of Glamorgan Council's CCTV operators that a burglar was on the loose.
Guy was easily located and police officers made an arrest.
He was searched and the stolen car keys were recovered.
Police then trawled the immediate area and found all the other items of stolen property.
Guy was subsequently charged and found guilty of aggravated burglary at Cardiff Crown Court last week.
Vale police have expressed their delight at the outcome of the incident.
Superintendent Josh Jones told the News: "We are pleased with the sentence that Cardiff Crown Court has issued because burglary will not be tolerated.
"As expected, the victims of this crime were frightened and shocked by the incident."
He also warned: "We advise all residents to always check that the windows are locked before they retire to bed each night."
