Now it's Kickboxing Dragons !

THE Barry Dragons Tae Kwon Do Club were recently invited to take part in the WMAA (Welsh Martial Arts Association) area championships).

This was the first time the youngsters had fought in a ring and were eager to take up the challenge.

The club prides itself on its ability to be able to fight all styles of martial arts. The venue was Creations Nightclub in Cardiff.

First in the ring was Abigail Palfrey who fought Owen Shaw of Combat Kickboxing.

Abigail finds it hard to get fights with female opponents and she did not disappoint as her opponent was not able to come out for the second round after taking some heavy blows.

Next up for the Dragons was Ashley Coles who fought Craig Thomas of Combat Kickboxing. Ashley got a grip on the fight from the first bell forcing his opponent to the ropes and stopping him in 30 seconds of the first round.

Next up was Danny Ryan who fought Darren Thomas, also of Combat Kickboxing. This fight went the distance with danny being stopped three times by fouls and low kicks but being the more skillful fighter, Danny came out on top taking a unanimous points decision.

Mark Palfrey was next up, he fought Ashley Powell of Combat Kickboxing. Mark was giving away height and weight and had it all to do against a very strong opponent, but Mark's superior kicks and combination punching saw him through to a unanimous points decision.

The only loser on the day was James Morgan who was stopped in the third round by a very good fighter but James will be back.

The ability to fight in different martial arts and be successful is a testament to the hard work and planning that the Dragons go through in their training.

Anyone wishing to train in Tae Kwon Do can call in at the Barry YMCA Tuesdays 5pm-7pm, Thursdays 6pm-8pm or Saturdays 5pm-8pm or call club instructor Colin Palfrey on 406971 or 0778 6497038.
