DVD review: 'The Recruit'

THE DELECTABLE Colin Farrell takes the lead role in the mildly entertaining movie The Recruit.

Farrell plays James Clayton, a computer whiz with a bright future. His father, Edward Clayton, disappeared when James was just nine-years-old, leaving the young man in search of the truth.

When Clayton is approached by CIA talent scout Walter Burke (Al Pacino), a veteran Spook, the driven young man begins a training programme that tests his whole being - intelligence, physical and mental limitations. Looking like he is at the top of the group, Clayton is shocked and disappointed when he washes out of the course. And then surprised when he is told he has actually done so well, it was all part of a scheme to get him the right cover for a job.

This is really where the story starts to falter. The lion's share of the movie is taken up with his training, and then all of a sudden he is on active duty in the middle of a highly sensitive case.

It is a good film, but good at best. It works up to a decent ending, with some twists and turns that might keep you guessing, if you can generate that much interest to bother.

If you want to veg out in front of a film that you don't have to think about too much and just rest your brain, this will do nicely. There's action, a little bit of love interest and the obvious happy ending. All in all, not a bad effort.
