50 YEARS AGO

EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of June 18, 1953:

The Cold Knap Baths Supt, Mr H Baker, dived fully clothed into the baths on Sunday, to rescue a girl from Ely, Cardiff, who had got into difficulties at the deep end.

Mrs Gwilym Davies gave a talk on recent visits to Llandudno and London, at a meeting of the OAP Suburb Branch on Monday.

Beautifully decorated with the State coach and horses, an iced cake has been presented by the Kathleen Street Coronation party to the Barry Accident Hospital.

At the monthly meeting of the Penmark Parish Council, Sir Hugo Boothby deprecated the decision of the Education Committee that Rhoose School is to be renamed "Rhws."

The official opening of the one thousandth house erected by the Barry Corporation since the end of the Second World War is to be performed by Mr W Thomas, B Sc, Under Secretary.

25 YEARS AGO

EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of June 22, 1978:

Hurray! said six-year-old Mark Woodfin, of Llanover Street, Barry, on being elected Prince of the Week at Warner's Yarmouth Holiday Centre, Isle of Wight in Hampshire.

Complaints that drinking water coming from the tap at Porthkerry Country Park on Sunday was foul and nauseous are being investigated by the Vale council's health inspectors.

A young Barry housewife, Mrs D E Hill-Anderson, of Fouracres Close, will have seven chances of winning the £1,000 jackpot in the Vale of Glamorgan Borough Council lottery following a run of good luck at Tower Discount on Saturday.

The 5,487 ton cargo ship Halifax Star is waiting to enter dry dock for repairs after hitting a pier in Barry harbour on Saturday.

Miss Natalie Tapscott, of Southey Street, who is eight years old and a pupil of Gladstone Road Primary School, has been entered for the 1978 Miss Pears competition.
