DVD review 'The Core'

ONE TYPICAL afternoon, 32 people in Boston keel over - stone cold dead!

Simultaneously in Trafalgar Square, pigeons lose their sense of direction and pelt London like a flock of feathered missiles.

Geologist and college professor Dr Josh Leek (Aaron Eckhart) suspects the worse. Praying he is wrong, his nastiest fears are proved right. 'The Core', as in, the Earth's core, has stopped spinning.

This is a surprisingly intelligent film, actually. As a teacher, Dr Josh explains the way the world works, in simple terms.

The Government has to believe him, especially when he tells them that very soon, all residents of this comfortable little planer are going to know how it feels to be microwaved. Not pleasant!

So Josh and a team of geniuses, along with a skilled pair of astronauts embark on an incredible mission - they have to bump start Earth.

And what better way to do it, than travel thousands of miles into the centre of the planet and explode a few nuclear bombs.

Easy!

Admittedly, the plot is entire science fiction, but it works really well -it's a triumph in Government secrecy, adding a little environmental irony and a touch of black humour to sweeten the human sacrifices.

All in all, it's a great film.

Rated 12, it contains brief strong language, and the obvious upset of most of the crew members meeting an untimely end.

But otherwise, a strong and entertaining family film.
