Dragons huff and puff

BARRY TOWN 0 BANGOR 3

BARRY are now firmly rooted at the bottom of the table and showing few signs that they can move up.

But the club was upbeat this week about the progress being made, particularly in the fund raising efforts and a bigger crowd.

A spokesman was optimistic that the club is on target to raise the £100,000 that is needed to make an offer to the creditors later this month.

Bangor were certainly no great shakes and would have been no match for last year's Barry team.

But they were too good for David Hughes' men despite all the Dragons huff and puff.

Barry's failure to stabilise the defence and also to pass the ball, contributed to their downfall.

The supply to Mattie Davies was poor and chances for Barry to score were almost non-existent.

There were two highlights of the match for Barry - one a stunning run by David Sherman culminating with a curling shot into the net.

It was an excellent move but the goal was ruled out because of offside by Alun Hughes.

The other highlight was a top class acrobatic save by debutante keeper Quinn McCarthy from a close range header.

The remaining 88 minutes of the match was largely uneventful, though Barry did hit the post and McCarthy made a couple more excellent stops.

Mattie Davies did curl a shot on target after 10 minutes but Phil Priestly in the Bangor goal was hardly troubled.

Barry's left wing back Ben Jones made two or three timely interceptions to stop Bangor attacks as the visitors tried to dominate the proceedings.

On 20 minutes Sherman went on his jinking run and his goal was a smart one, but offside stopped his joy.

Hughes supplied Mattie Davies with a pass which caught the striker by surprise and his shot was too weak to bother the keeper.

With Barry's attacking coming to a grinding halt it was Bangor who went 1-0 up through Paul Gedman after Barry failed to clear the ball.

Barry were under pressure from Bangor and it was just before the break that McCarthy made his stunning save from Eifion Jones' powerful header.

Early in the second half Lloyd Sloman hit a post for Barry, one of their few chances.

Lee Hunt also hit a post for the visitors after McCarthy did well to save from Owain Tudor Jones.

Hunt made no mistake on 62 minutes netting from close range to make it 2-0.

Minutes later it was 3-0 after Rick Evans scored from the penalty spot and the game was all over.

Barry had nothing more to offer and became resigned to another defeat.

The positive signs against Carmarthen and TNS were simply not there and David Hughes and Jason Murphy will be doing some strong talking during training.

No game this Saturday and in next week's 'News' we will bring you the latest news on Barry's attempts to satisfy creditors and keep football at Jenner Park.
