50 YEARS AGO

EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of April 30, 1953:

Fielding almost their strongest side, Barry Town made themselves safe from relegation from Division 1 of the Welsh League when they defeated Treharris by 2-0 at Jenner Park on Tuesday evening.

Hours of sunshine recorded in Barry during March amounted to 112.8 compared to 88.1 hours in March 1952.

Mr J R Bartlett, postmaster at Bargoed and formerly overseer at Barry, has been promoted postmaster at Kingswood, Bristol.

Janice Fouracre, of Albert Street, Cadoxton, a pupil at the Girls' County Grammar School, has been chosen as a Red Cross Junior Cadet to be on duty on the Coronation route.

Eleven-year-old Margery Heath, of Cadoc Crescent, who is to be one of the attendants to the May Maid during the Barry Youth Week, is a Red Cross Junior Cadet.

25 YEARS AGO

EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of May 4, 1978:

Margaret Morgan, the mezzo-soprano from Barry, has received a principal role in the BBC/Welsh National Opera Company's production of Benjamin Britten's A Midsummer Night's Dream.

Vandals are slowly destroying one of Barry's oldest churchyards and the church authorities have appealed to everyone living in the Coldbrook Road area to help keep an eye on it.

The new chairman of Barry Round Table is Mr Edwin Phillips, who was installed at the Table's recent annual general meeting.

On Thursday week the mayor of the Vale of Glamorgan (Cllr John Cotter) and the town mayor (Cllr Ken Adams) paid a courtesy visit to the Danybryn Cheshire Home in Radyr, Cardiff.
