More cash for council

The Vale of Glamorgan Council will receive a 3.7 percent increase in the annual settlement after adjustments from the Welsh Assembly Government. The settlement represents the amount of money local authorities will receive to spend on local budgets such as schools, roads and social services.

Figures published by the Assembly show that the Council will receive a total of £113.7 million in Assembly support excluding £1.2million in Performance Incentive Grant and £200,000 in Deprivation Grant, which the Welsh Assembly Government has introduced to tackle problems in some of the poorest areas in Wales.

The Welsh Assembly Government has already decided that the Council will receive approximately £9.2 million through a number of grants for specified purposes including carers grant, the mental handicap strategy and sustainable waste management.

Further specific grants will be announced in the near future.

Sue Essex, the Assembly Finance Minister, said "This is a reasonable settlement for The Vale of Glamorgan Council. It will fund continued growth in council services and build on the substantial growth of recent years."
