Police initiative to tackle car crime

VALE police have launched a new initiative in the war against car crime.

The Vale Community Safety Partnership erected permanent signs and been handing out leaflets at the area's coastline car parks reminding vehicle owners to remove property from their cars.

Act Against Autocrime leaflets, containing crime prevention advice, have also been distributed to car park users.

Vehicle crime is the most commonly reported crime within the Vale and, in carrying out operations at various locations, police have made numerous arrests.

The initiative involves police, the Vale council's Highway Maintenance Division and 'Friends of the Heritage Coast'.

Apart from ones at Cosmeston, which were paid for by Neighbourhood Watch; the signs were funded by the Welsh Assembly Government.

Superintendent Josh Jones said, "Vehicle crime is actually decreasing and this is due to police targeting the culprits and vulnerable locations and the car owner being more careful.

Local car parks included in the signing scheme are; Cosmeston (4); Barry Island (2); Llantwit Major (2); The Knap (1); Porthkerry Park (1); Lavernock (1); Swanbridge (1).
