Barry press self-destruct button

Tylorstown 19pts Barry 5pts

BARRY RFC's losing run in Division 3 South East continued when, last Saturday, they suffered their fourth league defeat in five games at Tylorstown.

The home side, who this season are celebrating their centenary, were without a league win thus giving the Barry contingent hope of an elusive second win.

This looked a distinct possibility during the opening 10 minutes as the Barry side encamped in the host's 22.

An early penalty attempt by full back Chris Cummings, narrowly shaved the wrong side of the upright but, within minutes, he put his name on the score sheet when, following quick ball from a lineout and slick passing in midfield, he burst through for an unconverted try.

However, for the remainder of the half Barry kept their finger on the self-destruct button by presenting Tylorstown with three easy penalty goals until, in the last few minutes of the half, sloppy defence on the narrow side of a 22 metre scrum, resulted in a clear run for the Tylorstown fullback, Lloyd to cross for a converted try and an interval lead of 16 points to 5 for his side.

Despite the half-time pep talk by Barry coaches Andrew Prosser and Darren Gibbon, who demanded more effort and tactical awareness, Barry were unable to break out of their own half.

The Tylorstown attacks were, however, sternly defended before, in the 80th minute of the session, Barry finally gained a foothold in the Rhondda side's half.

With injuries taking their toll, Barry were forced to introduce four replacements, Jimmy Hill, Jason Redrup, Rob Beeney and Rhys Green in place of Dai Griffiths, Rhidian Scott, Clive Thomas and 'Joost' Reynolds and with some new legs Barry started to pose more of a threat.

Strong runs by centres Kyle Fahiya and Dominic Busutill came close to breaking the try famine and a series of scrums resulted in skipper, Martin Tanner, crossing the line only for the try to be disallowed for a 'double movement' after a tackle.

In the last minute, Tylorstown drove home the final nail when, following ill discipline and back chat from the frustrated Barry side, an innocuous penalty, which had been awarded, in their half, was moved 20 metres forward resulting in a further 3 points.

This Saturday Barry entertain Mountain Ash, ko 2.30pm.
