Firework thugs in the spotlight

BARRY residents being intimidated by fireworks have a chance to stop irresponsible shopkeepers from selling the dangerous pyrotechnics illegally.

During the run up to last year's Guy Fawkes night, Trading Standards were contacted by the public expressing concerns about the misuse of fireworks on Vale streets.

This year, in an attempt to reduce the number of antisocial incidents Trading Standards Officers are asking the public to help them.

Most traders who register with Trading Standards store and sell fireworks safely, are reputable and ensure that only people over eighteen years of age are allowed to buy them.

However, Trading Standards Officers are aware that not all sources of fireworks are so reputable or - so safe.

By calling the Trading Standards Advice line on 01446 709105, you can leave details of "black market" sources of fireworks being sold from vans, cars, or houses.

And if you believe a trader is supplying fireworks to children under 18, by notifying Trading Standards they may be targeted during this year's operations in the run up to November 5.

Remember -

fireworks can only be bought by those over 18

never buy fireworks which do not show on the labels they comply with BS7114

sparklers are fireworks too - they should not be given to children under five years of age

it is illegal to let off fireworks in a public place

follow the firework safety code.

Trading Standards are also encouraging children to think about the dangers of misused fireworks. Primary school children in the Vale are designing posters warning of these dangers.

The winning poster entry will be used in the Vale's Trading Standards firework safety campaign for next year and prizes will be awarded for the best designs.

Under a voluntary code of practice, the fireworks industry has agreed that fireworks should only be on general sale to the public for three weeks leading up to November 5 and a few days afterwards.

In addition fireworks can also be sold between December 8 and January 1.
