Sad sight

THIS morning I sat on a bench alongside the Waters' Edge Residential Home, it is a sad sight.

The home has been closed for nearly a year now, and the vandals are beginning to smash windows.

This probably suits the Council, as it will cause less clamour from the voters of Barry when the bulldozers arrive.

My imagination ran loose as I could see the happy old people living their last years in such pleasant surroundings.

The magnificent view of the channel would greet them each morning, and for those able enough, a walk down the promenade would awake a ravenous appetite.

But greed got the better of the Tory Vale Council.

The advent of luxury flats, for a few elite, instead of the many poor old people, was surely a winner.

The present Tories and their poodles, the Welsh Nationalists, who have held the reins of office for nearly six years now are obsessed with luxury flats.

Besides Waters' Edge, there is the empty hospital, ideal as a home for people to live out their remaining years.

But no.

That was designated for the elite few, but the incinerator got in the way.

Now, the Council don't know who to sell it to.

When one reads of bed blocking in our hospitals being such a problem, apparently there are some 600 old people in Llandough alone, who would be better off somewhere else, perhaps Sully or the Waters' Edge.

But the obsession with luxury flats whether they are on the Waterfront, or the Knap, is paramount in the minds of the Tories.

And it is no surprise to see Conservatives acting this way, it is their doctrine to represent the rich and not the poor.

We have just witnessed the heartless and callous way that the caring Tories have treated the old people in Pontalun Way.

Now they deny this and blame the Barry & District News for misrepresenting their action. They haven't even the guts to admit their arrogant mistake.

Of course the Nationalists will disassociate themselves from such action, they only want the good publicity.

Although Labour has had a hard time recently, they have made mistakes nationally, but at least Labour owns up, and apologises to the people.

I would like to see a decent Labour Council returned at the next election and return to a fairer society. The people of Barry deserve better.
