Teenager arrested

A BRAVE shopkeeper has stood up to a would-be thief who tried to rob him with a 15-inch kitchen knife.

The shop's owner Anwar Shahjahan managed to chase off the empty-handed man, after he declined to hand over any money.

The incident happened at the M&S Superstore off-licence, in Vere Street, on Sunday night at around 8.55pm.

Mr Shahjahan said: "I was putting some drinks away when he came in. He showed me the knife, and I thought he was joking, then he asked for money.

I didn't give him anything."

Mr Shahjahan rang for his wife who was at the back of the shop.

Nasrin Shahjahan approached the man, not realising he was holding the knife.

She said: "I heard Anwar ring and I thought he just wanted help with a customer.

I went and stood right next to the man and asked him 'how can I help'.

He showed me the knife and I was so scared.

I would never have come out, because I also had my two-year-old son behind me."

She then made her way to the back of the shop, where she could call the police.

"I went back to where the phone was, and when I looked on the monitor I couldn't see Anwar in the shop.

I got really worried and I thought he had been stabbed. I didn't know he had chased him off."

Another customer who was in the store managed to call the police on their mobile. "They arrived really quickly.

By the time Anwar got back to the shop, after chasing the man, they were already here."

Anwar added: "The man saw that I had a broom behind the counter, and must have got a scared himself."

Police have arrested a sixteen-year-old and charged him with attempted robbery.

He has been released on bail and is due to appear at Cardiff Youth Court next week.
