Under stress

I WAS very surprised and concerned after reading your article 'OAPs in eviction nightmare' in last week's issue.

I can hardly believe that the council can openly discriminate against the aged and put vulnerable adults at risk by moving possibly ex-offenders who are homeless and youngsters possibly out of the care system into surrounding flats.

To suggest that single mums would move in seems quite absurd as the pensioners' complex only has one bedroomed flats.

In today's society many elderly people already feel vulnerable and this, I feel, will put them under great stress.

Surely these people should be able to live in an area where they feel safe in the comfort of the familiarity of their surrounding and the relative peace the complex provides?

I hope the people of Barry support the pensioners' decision and help them to fight their cause to stay in an age-related complex and area.

They say that there is little respect for the elderly within the community. This is no surprise as this scandalous plan has been hatched by the very authority entrusted with their guardianship.

Has the council not learned from the disastrous events that followed stage one of this project at St Michaels Gardens, where flats are continually being damaged by tenants?

Pensioners have found it impossible to live in that complex. So why does the council think that the pensioners of Gibbonsdown will find it any more tolerable?

Perhaps if the pensioners started trashing their flats, the council would give them the service they desperately need and thoroughly deserve.
