IT WAS a double celebration for Barry's Local Committee of Cancer Research UK Cymru last week.
Not only did the group herald its Ruby Anniversary, but members were cheering the fact they had reached an amazing landmark in their local fundraising efforts - a total of £217,000.
At a special ceremony held at the Mount Sorrel Hotel on Friday, September 19, Cancer Research UK Cymru Community Fundraiser Linda Strange presented a special achievement award.
The certificate officially recognises the Committee's dedication and commitment in raising an incredible amount of money for Cancer Research UK Cymru since its formation forty years ago.
Linda Strange presented the Certificate of Appreciation to Geoff Brown, who has been the Chairman of the Local Committee for the last 16 years.
The memorable evening also included a dinner dance.
Linda said: "Over the past 40 years the enthusiasm shown by all the Barry Local Committee members, past and present, has been tremendous and Cancer Research UK Cymru is grateful for their continued support."
Geoff Brown added: "Although all 108 people who attended the night, it was more than just a celebration evening.
It was a chance for us to say a big thank you to all those people who support us so generously every time we hold a fundraising event.
It is not unknown for us to make between £800 and £1,000 during one effort.
"We feel extremely proud to have been given this recognition, and that it doesn't only reflect our work, but that of all those who have supported us."
Cancer Research UK is the UK's leading cancer charity, dedicated to curing, treating and preventing the disease through world-class research.
The charity relies almost entirely on voluntary donations from the public to fund the vital work of its 3,000 research doctors, scientists and nurses.
