ACTION is being taken to curb speeding motorists and make Barry roads safer.
The Vale council is planning speed ramps, one-way systems and parking restrictions to reduce risks to pedestrians, particularly children, and reduce congestion.
Broad Street, Buttrills Road, St Paul's Avenue and a busy junction in Gibbonsdown are involved.
In Gibbonsdown council officers are concerned about the junction of Ramsey Road and St Bride's Way, which has seen two serious accidents in the last three years and a child slightly injured in another incident.
A new zebra crossing has already been installed on Ramsey Road.
Research has shown that the junction is very busy, with nearly 5,200 cars going through it every day.
And that figure will rise as more and more houses are built at Pencoedtre.
Drivers on St Bride's Way are also speeding, the average speed of most of them being 36 mph in a 30mph zone.
Officials are particularly concerned because near the junction there is a residential care home, nursery school, doctor's surgery, plus children walking from Oakfield Primary School and Ysgol Gwuan Y Nant.
The eventual solution is a mini roundabout, but in the meantime the council is planning a 50mm speed ramp to slow drivers down.
Council officials are also worried about road safety on Buttrills Road near the junction with Barry Road.
They say people parking in the area near the Old College Inn and shop opposite are causing obstructions.
The plan is to ban waiting on the corner of Buttrills Road and Barry Road outside the pub.
A one-way system is planned for St Paul's Avenue, while 20mph zones would be installed in St Paul's Avenue, Trinity Street and High Street.
Speed ramps would be placed in St Paul's Avenue and Trinity Street.
Officials think the speed of drivers along St Paul's Avenue is too high, particularly with nearby schools.
Officials say traffic displaced by the one-way system can easily be accommodated on Broad Street.
In Broad Street the council also plan two-hour waiting restrictions. Residents will be exempt.
