50 YEARS AGO EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of April 9, 1953:

'Young blood' is being sought by the Water Department of the Barry Corporation following a report by the Water Engineer, Mr F C Squires, that within ten years most of the staff of the Inspector's and plumbing department will have retired.

Two Barry runners were members of the Welsh YMCA team which easily won the international cross-country championship at Motherwell, Glasgow, on Saturday week. They were W E Butcher, son of W E Butcher JP, and Mrs Butcher and D Lakin son of Mr Stanley Lakin of Highlight Farm.

The annual dance of the Barry and Barry Island Badminton Club took place at Bindles Ballroom yesterday (Wednesday) week when over 270 people danced to the music of Bert Miller and his band.

C H Bailey Ltd, the dry dock owners and ship repairers, are playing their part in checking the oil menance along the coastline at Barry.

The Barry Lifeboat Ladies Branch held a successful dinner at the Pickwick Cafe on Thursday night, when the Mayor and Mayoress (Ald and Mrs K C Steer) presented a statuette from the Lifeboat Institution to Miss Lilian Daily.

lBarry Town Hall's well known chimes clocked out for a few hours rest on Monday when a pulley rope broke and one of the heavy weights that keep the civic time piece ticking crashed to the floor - above the executive offices of the Vale Council.

The public of Barry will be able to learn more about the Barry Round Table's ambitious £100,000 project to build a day centre for the elderly at Maesycwm Street, Barry, when the Round Table have a stand at King Square this Saturday.

A caravan exhibition ending on Saturday, has been held on King Square for over a week to outline the proposals for pedestrianising the Holton Road and King Square area.

A film provided by Mr Dennis Lilley, of Cardiff Wales Airport, was shown to members of the Cadoxton Darby and Joan Club on Tuesday week.
