EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of August 27 1953:
One of the first persons Chief Petty Officer Jim Hustler, of Barry, saw when his ship HMS Euryalis, Flag Ship of the South Atlantic Fleet, docked at Buffalo Harbour, Cape Province, South Africa, on August 6, was his uncle, Mr W Hustler.
St John and Nursing Cadets from Salisbury and Bulawayo, Southern Rhodesia, were welcomed to Barry at a social given in their honour at the St John Ambulance headquarters.
Able Seaman Kenneth Stephen Drew, eldest son of Mr and Mrs Albert Edward Drew, of Gladstone Road, Barry, was a member of the crew of HMS Daring, the first British warship to reach the earthquake stricken Greek island of Argostoli, with Earl Mountbatten the Commander in Chief on board.
The annual cricket match between the men and boys of St Aidan's Church, Cadoxton, which took place at Pencoedtre on Thursday resulted in a win for the boys by 40 runs. George Baldwin, captain of the boys' team scored 12 out of his team's total of 71.

Barry Athletic bowlers Jim Morgan and Russell Evans, who won bronze medals at the recent Commonwealth Games in Canada, were given a reception by the Town Mayor of Barry Cllr Allan Maidment on Thursday.
The Barry Island Pleasure Park celebrates its 50th birthday with a gala evening on Friday, September 15, with all proceeds going towards the Barry Round Table day care centre project.
September 1978 is a special month for Royal Air Force St Athan for not only is the anniversary of the Battle of Britain to be commemorated but also the 40th anniversary of the opening of this RAF station.
The winning label in the Royal National Lifeboat Institution balloon race at the Barry Show was released by Mr Nigel Frowen, of Ty Coch Road, Ely, and returned by Mr Ray Poynter of Newgate Lane, Fareham, Hants.
