50 YEARS AGO

EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of July 2, 1953:

Miss Barbara Close, of Wenvoe Terrace, has been chosen as the "Personality Queen" for the Labour Party's All Wales Fte and Gala at Romilly Park on July 10 and 11.

Rev E William E Burridge, Rev John Wilson and Mr Reginald Honey of Barry have been appointed to represent the Cardiff and Swansea District at the Methodist Conference which opens at Birmingham on July 10.

The Coronation Trophy, presented to the Barry United Clubs' League was won by the West End Club. Mr Harold Baker received the cup from Mr George Salisbury.

In celebration of the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, Mr John Collins proprietor of the Pleasure Park at Barry Island, has made splendid gifts to charities and organisations amounting to £500.

Miss Ruby Holtam of 110 High Street, hit upon a novel idea to raise money for the Welsh Church Appeal Fund, when she decided to embroider a tablecloth.

25 YEARS AGO

EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of July 6, 1978:

A bitter and long running battle over the modernisation of 20 council flats on Barry's Central estate between the tenants and Vale council is to be resolved in the householders favour.

Mr Terry Marston has been appointed marketing officer for the Central Electricity Generating Board's South Western Region, following the retirement of Mr Eddie Stanley.

Mr George Parry a wagon repairer with Powell Dyffryn Wagon Co Ltd, at their Radyr depot was congratulated by Mr R E Morgan (managing director) on completion of 33 years service.

Kathy Atkins a former "Bunny Girl," whose family are from Cadoxton, has won the highest award so far presented by the Combined Insurance Company of America (CICA) for the sales of its life policies in the UK.
