David is an inspiration

AN EXTRAORDINARY Barry boy has overcome his own difficulties to raise money for Ty Hafan.

Nine-year-old David Lelande of Maes-y-Cwm Street has problems with his kidneys, bowels and controlling his muscles.

But the determined youngster is set to row five kilometres on an exercise machine for the children's hospice.

His proud mum Andrea said: "David puts aside his disabilities for Ty Hafan.

He's done lots over the last three years, like sponsored swims and cake sales.

He generally does one fundraising event each year.

When he saw my new rowing machine, he decided that's what he would do for the hospice this time."

Because of David's physical disabilities, the sponsored row will take place over a period of three to four weeks.

He started on Monday, August 18 and David aims to row 200 metres a day, with Andrea recording the distance until he reaches the 5k mark.

David began his interest in the hospice when his 18-year-old cousin Gareth Hookin, who sadly died earlier this year, started receiving care there.

David said: "I think that they looked after Gareth very well, and I liked the people there, so I wanted to help them."

This enthusiastic young boy gets his friends in Gladstone Primary School involved in his charity ventures - this year he asked them all to take part in 'Scarf for a laugh' in March.

He also helps his mum, marshalling at the Barry 5k Run, Three Peak Challenge and Operation Midnight.

Ty Hafan's fundraising officer Sandie Grindlay said: "David is a very special young boy. Whenever we have events, he is there to help out with is mum.

Over the years, David has raised over £1,000 for Ty Hafan.

But what he has given us cannot be quantified.

The effort he has put in over the years is priceless."
