50 YEARS AGO

EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of August 13, 1953:

lMr G Bishop, of Oxford Street, Barry, a member of the staff of the South Wales Electricity Board, has successfully completed the Salesmanship Training Course conducted by the British Electrical Development Association.

lAt a protest meeting of parents at the Colcot Welfare Hall on Thursday, it was decided to send a delegation to meet the South East Glamorgan Divisional Executive to discuss the situation which has arisen since the Executive decided that the Colcot School should be reserved for infants.

Mr James Aaron Brain, of Gladstone Road, Barry, has modelled the modern Norwegian ship, M S Blenheim, with its unusual conning tower shaped funnel for the "Model Engineer" exhibition to be held at the New Horticultural Hall, Westminster, in August.

Light rain which began in the early morning and continued for the greater part of the day, marred the annual show of the Borough of Barry Horse and Horticultural Society at Romilly Park on Wednesday.

In the recently held Proficiency Examinations the following cadets from 372 (Barry) Squadron Air Training Corps were successful in passing the necessary tests. They were corporals B Ferriday, C Burbidge, M Brooks and Cadets B Tobin, D Williams and E Tobin.

EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of August 17 1978:

There is increasing concern about the future use of Sully Hospital and its role in providing medical services for the Vale of Glamorgan's wide ranging community.

Alison Taylor, of St Brannock's Close, Barry, gained third prize in the craft competition at the National Eisteddfod in Cardiff on Monday week.

After marrying in 1915, a Barry woman emigrated to Australia and she returned to her home town recently for the first time in 53 years.

Mrs Theresa Bates, who is now 86 years of age, made the two day trip to this country on her own to visit her sister, Mrs Violet Collier, and all her relatives, many of whom she had never seen.

A Barry mother of five has gained a useful addition to her family, a new Fiat 127 car. Mrs Carole Qurrey, of Marlborough Close, Victoria Park, was one of 30 winners of the cars in a fish fingers competition run by Birds Eye Ltd.
