Gross idea

I APPLAUD Mr J Harrington's letter in the Barry & District News (Thursday, July 24), regarding the poor standards of local government and the importance of highlighting these examples at election time.

I would like to write about the proposed six-storey block of flats at the Knap.

Council officers have recommended the plan be approved, although I believe they have failed to recognise that it has insufficient amenities and car parking and will invade, from its windows and viewing areas, the privacy of adjacent homes . Those living at Heol y Gaer will be well-advised to seek professional planning advice because this is a weak-willed decision which will effect property value: there is a chance of a compensation claim.

Conservationists, CADW, Barry Council and 172 people exhibiting public concern by writing a letter, have made formal objections to this planning application.

The Vale of Glamorgan councillors seem to be using soundbites to placate the public.

For example, it was said they were "not prepared to sell the soul of the council", then it was revealed they were seeking much in excess of the £100,000 offered for the substitution of the amenities of our Knap gardens for the planning gain offered.

The proposed multi-storey block is a gross over-development and if any similar structure is approved without the benefit of examination by a planning tribunal, it will be a flagrant negligence of the responsibilities bestowed upon of Vale of Glamorgan councillors.

Mr S M Brooks, Broad Street, Barry.
