Perfect start to theatre career

A TALENTED Barry student is set to star alongside world renowned opera star Placido Domingo - and he hasn't even graduated yet!

Gareth Mason, 21, from Rutland Close, began studying at the Arts Ed College of Drama and Musical Theatre three years ago. He took the musical theatre course to hone his singing, dancing and acting abilities.

Gareth graduates on July 11. But before that prestigious day, he has an even bigger engagement, because on July 10 he will join the elite on the stage of the Royal Opera House, performing in a production of Pagliacci.

Shocked to have been offered such a high-profile job so soon after completing his course, Gareth is still not resting on his laurels. He told us: "There are only eight shows. But I have already auditioned for other work, and I am quite hopeful I'll hear from those soon.

"But to land a job like this one so quickly is amazing. I will only be playing the part of a dancing clown, but Franco Zeffirelli is directing the opera. He is world-famous director, and having this type of experience on my CV is fantastic."

Fortunately, the nature of Gareth's course means he will not be too stressed in the run-up to his stint with Placido.

The former St Richard Gwyn pupil said: "Luckily, in the third year there are no exams. You are assessed on your previous two years and your performances. So, I don't have to worry about finishing the term. I'm free on July 11, so I can go to the graduation ceremony with my friends."

In Barry, his family are thrilled. Mum Sian and dad Jeff are travelling to London for the Press and Close Family preview on July 7. His mum said: "I'm so proud of Gareth. He has always wanted to be in musical theatre, and before he has even finished his course, he has landed himself this role. We're thrilled for him."
