A JOINT initiative is being launched to tackle under-age drinking and vandalism in Romilly Park.
Anti-social behaviour has increased considerably in recent months with most of the problems occurring at weekends.
In a bid to address concerns raised by residents and users, the Vale of Glamorgan Council and the Police will from tomorrow initiate a pilot project aimed at reducing the youth annoyance in the park and surrounding area.
Developed as part of the local Crime and Disorder Strategy, the moves include the closure of all but one of the park gates on Friday and Saturday evenings, the exception being the entrance opposite the railway tunnel.
Access through the gates will be controlled by police officers and CCTV, and youth workers will attend to outline the range of leisure activities open to local youngsters. Council leader Jeffrey James said: "This is an excellent example of the council's willingness to work in partnership to improve the quality of life for the community.
"The council is committed to providing high quality parks and open spaces and, with officers working towards the achievement of Green Flag status, a national quality award, for Romilly Park, this initiative will assist in this aim."
Vale Divisional Police commander superintendent Josh Jones added: "Local residents have a reasonable expectation to enjoy the park and not be troubled by anti-social behaviour from a minority of young people.
"This is a very creative proposal that we hope will encourage responsible behaviour from the small number who spoil things for the rest."
