THE VALE'S cabinet member for Lifelong Learning has revealed his frustration at the lack of funding for schools in the area.
Following the State of Vale Debate, which was held in the Memorial Hall in May, the elected members for each of the key areas discussed have been talking about their aims.
Cllr Tony Hampton is responsible for education in the Vale. He said: "One problem we have in the Vale - and it's a problem experienced everywhere - is funding, especially with regard to school buildings.
"We need £20 million of investment to get current buildings into a serviceable state. In Barry, they are better-off than further out in the Vale. Although Bryn Hafren had asbestos, we make sure it is removed safely. But rural schools are being forced to choose between their curriculum or their buildings. It's very frustrating.
"However, there is hope that the Welsh Assembly's pledge to get all schools in Wales 'fit for purpose' by 2010 will take off soon."
With proposals in the pipeline to bring the University of Wales Institute of Cardiff (UWIC) to the Island, Cllr Hampton is excited about making Barry a Higher and Further Education town once again.
He said: "The main development in Barry so far has been the Welsh medium school. We are also looking into co-education for pupils between ages 11 and 16. This may spark a few protests, but it will be carefully researched before any decisions are taken.
"But the potential good UWIC could bring into Barry is very exciting. The tourism and hospitality suit, plus the IT centre which is due to open soon will help to spread the area's good reputation far and wide.
"What is important to remember is that our children are our finest assets, and we have to make sure they have a first class education."
