Thieves con OAP

A FRAIL Barry pensioner has become a victim of a distraction burglary - and police are warning that the culprits could strike again.

Pat Hunt is 83 years old and lives alone in her Elizabeth Avenue home.

At noon on Thursday, June 12, a man knocked on her door. He told Pat he was from the 'water board', and had to reduce the pressure in her taps.

Pat said: "I didn't have time to think. He pushed past me into the kitchen, turning both taps on full. I'm deaf anyway, but with the noise I didn't even know another man was in the house."

With Pat in the kitchen, a second man ran upstairs and ripped her safe off the wall. As soon as he exited, the first man turned off the water and left.

Pat added: "Apart from being furious with these men, I'm angry with myself. I should've realised it wasn't right, but it all happened so fast.

"I'm not sure how much they have taken, but it could be over £100."

The following descriptions have been issued. One man is described as white, 20 to 23 years old, around 5 foot 8 inches tall and of average build with short, light-coloured hair, with a middle parting. This man was wearing an un-ironed grey shirt.

The other man was also white with a dark complexion, around 18 to 20 years old and he had a stocky build. He had short, dark hair with long layers on the top and was wearing a navy blue sleeveless jacket.

Barry CID's DC Martin Loosemore said: "If you are not expecting a visit from any company or service provider, ask for identification before opening the door.

"Any genuine official should willingly and prominently display cards for you to see. If you are in doubt, ring a relative or neighbour for assistance, or the company itself to verify details."

If you have information regarding this crime, or if you have seen the describe suspects, contact DC Loosemore on 01446 734451 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
