Cadoxton gain 16 shot win at home to Bargoed

CADOXTON improved their performance with a 16 shot win against visitors Bargoed in the Municipal League 3.

Andrew Hatcher, back from a break, led his rink to a tremendous win with some magical lead bowls from Viv Thurston helping the cause, and good support from Graham Garland and Howard Hellyar.

This combination won in the first two matches of the season but since then have not been available to play together until this game.

After taking a 19-3 lead they had a lapse for three ends, dropping 9 shots, but soon put things right again to finish with a 16 shot success.

Dave Hookway had to produce good bowls to cover the unaccustomed lack of support from the front on Don Kuhnell's rink and this kept them in contention until the 15th end when a 5 was conceded to open up an 8 shot deficit which remained until the end.

Bill Pycroft's four had a tough struggle to stay in the game for the first half but eventually put their play in order and only lost on one end in the latter stages to win by 2 shots.

The rink skipped by Rhys Motton took the lead after eight ends and held on to the end of the game although they were pushed all the way and felt fortunate to finish with 6 shots in their favour.

D Jones, L Rees, D Hookway, D Kuhnell 12-20; V Thurston, G Garland, H Hellyar, A Hatcher 32-16; M Hughes, L Cundliffe, D Brook, R Motton 19-13; D Walters, C Burgess, K Chedgzoy, W Pycroft 19-17. Total 82-66.

Captain Alan Carpenter took his Cadoxton A team to Splott for an ML5 match and skipped the only winning rink.

There were a number of absentees, and Max Webb, who will not be 12 years old for a few months, but is full of enthusiasm, played lead.

The result was quite pleasing for after going 9-0 down after only three ends, they took the lead for the first time on the 20th end.

Dai Tuck's rink had a close encounter, only to drop 5 behind with three ends left. Two 2s and a single to finish ensured a share of the points on the rink.

Ron Barnfield's four dropped behind early in the game but a spirited recovery saw them draw level on the penultimate end. Unfortunately a 4 was conceded on the last.

The final rink, led by Barry Sales, probably wished they had stayed at home after scoring only 5 singles throughout the match. G Powell, L Davies, W Vaughan, B Sales 5-27; B Meads, D Evans, R Cole, R Barnfield 15-19; P Jenkins, G Davies, G Hatcher, D Tuck 22-22; M Webb, L Little, J Stewart, A Carpenter 19-17. Total 61-85. Cadoxton visited the disreputable all-weather green at Cowbridge on June 11 and were well beaten. Even the score cards were lost.
