Traffic risks

I WAS very interested to read the article in the Barry & District News dated May 15, 2003, concerning the risks posed to children of High Street School by heavy traffic.

As a resident of Aberystwyth Crescent, I feel that I should write to query certain points made in the article.

From previous correspondence received from the local authority, I am lead to understand that the official entrances to both High Street and St Baruc's Schools, are registered as St Pauls Avenue and not Aberystwyth Crescent.

The 'so called lane' mentioned, is in fact private property.

It is the entrance to a builder's yard, for which the owner's pay council taxes. Originally, this yard had gates, which had to be removed, because of damage to them by 'reversing drivers'.

Finally, the latest action of the school/authority to lock the school gates during the day, has increased the flow of traffic significantly into Aberystwyth Crescent; this flow is very often beyond acceptable limits.

While sharing the concern of some parents and the school over the safety of the children, what of that of the residents?

The quality of life of these residents leaves a great deal to be desired - they often receive abuse, damage to property and vehicles.

The situation will only improve with greater monitoring from those in authority.
