Site is a magnet for rowdy youths

A CONCERNED Barry father is terrified that an abandoned pub at the back of his home is an accident waiting to happen.

St Catherine's Court resident Simon Bracken says the Master Mariner, which closed down before he and his partner Sarah Gallivan moved to the area seven months ago, is drawing gangs of rowdy youths.

The 25 year old told the News: "I've got three children. Connor is four, Declan is two and Ffion is only eight-months old.

Being so young, they all go to bed early, but they keep getting disturbed by the noise coming from inside the pub.

"We'd love to let Connor out the back to play where there is grassy area - we could watch him from the house - but we're terrified the broken glass you can see in the car park will be hidden in the grass."

According to Simon, who works for Lion Laboratories, the shutters placed over the windows and doors of the SA Brains brewery pub have been prised open.

He added: "I think the brewery must have left a pile of glasses and fittings inside the building, because you can hear smashing throughout the night.

Then when they leave they put the shutters back and you can't tell they've been in there.

"The pub is on different levels, and these kids are taking risks getting in and out of the place. Someone is going to get very badly hurt."

A spokesman for SA Brain & Co. Ltd, said: "Keeping the property secure is a priority for us and we are taking immediate steps to investigate the reported problems at the site and to ensure that access to the pub is prevented.

While we have no plans to re-open the pub ourselves, we are currently looking at one or two options for the site."
